Spain wins and Nike gains from Euro 2008

One of the cool things about Scope is that we have an incredible view of what is goin on in terms of online video. One the brands we track is Nike and since the Euro 2008 is going on, one of the biggest dustups between brands is taking place today after the Spain win.

This Ad made for Euro 2008 by Nike features the top players from Spain soccer team. The entire team is sponsored by Adidas, but each of these players are signed by Nike. This video (and a lot of derivatives) is hitting it big in the past few hours with lot of people flocking to DailyMotion and YouTube to feed off their Euro crave. Nike, even though did not sponsor Spain (they sponsored the Portugal team in this tournament, see video below), are coming out as winners and getting the most bang for their buck.

  1. The Spanish team sponsored by Adidas. But the guys who run the field, who defend the goal and who score the goals….powered by Nike.

  3. This is fairly common nowadays. During the 1992 Olympics the US Men’s Basketball Dream Team was sponsored by Reebok but its biggest stars were signed to Nike. During the gold medal presentation those players draped an American flag over the Vector logo on their warm-ups. The entire NBA today is sponsored by Adidas despite Nike’s presence there. If Michael Jordan were to return to play again today every single piece of team apparel that he’d wear, from his shorts to his hat, would sport the Adidas logo.

  4. I think NIKE is a huge American marketing machine that has zero history in football. There ad´s are getting more and more aggressive ( don´t like the one that´s shown at all ). Prefer adidas ten times more since it is honestly committed to football and that´s for ages. Nike jumped on the bandwagon and tries to cash in by there brainwash campaigns ( no money to make with American football ) . Keep it European amigos - adidas´s shoes fit at least properly, that is a undeniable fact no money can wash away…Saludos

  7. … all that is matter to me is that ESPANA has won and that makes our adidas Jerseys relevant for the eternity!!! All people will remeber is our 08 Uniform and not the boots. BTW all five top scorer worn adidas and the pack is head by David Villa ;-) … def. adidas is the winner.

  11. Playing Football for over ten years I can only confirm that Nike’s quality is very bad ( also there Running shoes ). Adidas in comparison lasts for ages plus it´s rather the real deal anyway. Don´t like Nike´s Image either…very good point that football is a team sport ( if not THE team sport! ) but Nike stresses way too much the individual instead of a team effort. Think adi has manifested its leading position during the last two Championships that derives from true passion for the sport instead of a clever business plan ( compare the history of both companies! )… nuff said

Nike started out as a runningbrand, and the last 2 years they have won award after award for their running shoes.
Also the football shoes are quality.
The top shoes get made in italy, so i do not know where you got your info, but you r dead wrong son !!

  13. we are talking about football, there no choice………… nike copy from adidas, adidas is who give the roles and all the brands are behind. nike is marketing and in football, if you are a football player, you kno that is adidas field and puma, umbro (m¡nike will learn from the buying), diadora, lotto too.

ANother question, spain wins because moves the ball and do not loose it. the brain is Xavi (adidas), the power is Senna and Xavi Alonso (adidas too) , the maximun goalier is Villa (adidas), the best goalkeeper is Casillas (Reebok , adidas group), the best defender is Puyol (yes, is nike) Torres is nike too (he likes adidas but nike pays more).

    the rest is marketing

i do not like the advertiment, is to try to have the glory when the final was two adidas teams.

NIKE: Money can´t buy everything (ask to germany´s federation)

    a friend from spain
